G. Scott Herby’s journey from Buddhist to Christian is a story of profound spiritual encounter. His tale of moving toward emboldened faith actually begins on a California hillside back in 1986, where he experienced a mysterious life-saving event. Struggling to come to terms with what had happened, he chalked it up to the power of higher consciousness. That moment would be recalled when Scott’s conversion story picked up in earnest in 2011 with a second, and more clearly defined, spiritual encounter.
Spiritual Awakening
Raised agnostic, Scott discovered an interest in Eastern religions and soon found himself committed to a serious atheistic Buddhist practice.
Suffice to say, God’s ever-present grace laid pathways for Scott’s further reflection and deep questioning of his religious orientation — even while serving as a student teacher of Buddhism at a prominent Chinese Buddhist Temple.
Eventually, through more intellectual and spiritual exploration, and prayer, Scott experienced his second profound spiritual encounter, and this time there could be no denying its heavenly connections.
Scott likes to say that through his Buddhist practice, he did indeed experience enlightenment – by the light of Jesus Christ. This powerful transformation led to his baptism and receiving his local minister’s license at First Church of the Nazarene, Pasadena, and ignited a passion within Scott to help others find their own firm footing in their Christian faith.
The Birth of Emboldened Faith
After witnessing the deconstruction of Christians’ faith in today’s anti-Christian popular culture, Scott felt the need for open, honest discussions about the challenges facing Christians today and how to build a strong, purposeful, unshakeable faith in Jesus. The idea for Emboldened Faith began to take root in 2018 after hearing a sermon on Paul’s speaking about the “foolishness of the cross” (1 Corinthians 1:18). He admits he blatantly lifted the term “emboldened” from a mentor’s book titled Emboldened, about the need for women to be emboldened to perform their calling in the church. He thought the term perfect to apply to his faith project .

A note from Scott:
Oh, yeah, about the politics…
I believe that integrating my Christian faith with my political views is a natural extension of my understanding of the Kingdom of God as I seek to bring its promises into a practical reality here and now.
While I am patriotic (and a veteran) and maintain values of classical liberalism — now somehow seen as right wing by the political left — I reject the label of “Christian Nationalist,” recognizing that my stance could be misconstrued. I see my political engagement as an act of love for my neighbor, and I believe that the current cultural climate in the United States necessitates addressing political realities alongside spiritual ones while I endeavor to engage with those who are seeking deeper communion with God.
Even as I focus on the supernatural and preternatural, I find it necessary to help expand the Christian perspective in American political discourse, informed by my libertarian leanings, my holding to the principle of subsidiarity as a human right, and traditional values.
Today’s conversations are held at the crossroads.
